The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) project, “Celebrating the people who have contributed to Thurrock's rich heritage”, announced earlier this year, includes funds for some new Thurrock heritage plaques. The subjects of these plaques will be nominated by the public and two will be chosen by a public vote. Made possible by money raised by National Lottery players, these plaques highlight the people, places and events that are important or interesting parts of Thurrock's heritage.

Nominations can be made via social media (Thurrock Local History Society on Facebook or Thurrock History on Twitter), by e-mail to webmaster@thurrock-history.org.uk or by post to Susan Yates, c/o Thurrock Museum, Second Floor, Thameside Complex, Orsett Rd, Grays RM17 5DX. A panel of leading people concerned with Thurrock's heritage will select a short list from these nominations and there will be a public vote later in the year. The person with the highest vote will get a new plaque as will the person of the opposite sex with the highest vote.

Hazel Saco, Thurrock's Heritage Officer, said,

There are many contributors to Thurrock's heritage who deserve to be recognised with a plaque. We are very pleased that this National Lottery grant will allow us to expand the plaque scheme. Heritage belongs to everyone so we wish to involve as many people as possible in deciding who should get a plaque.

The late Jonathan Catton (Thurrock's then Heritage Officer) watches as Ingrid Pitt talks about her experience as the "Hammer Queen of Horror" at the unveiling of the heritage plaque to Dracula.
